Alexander Borodin wrote his String Quartet No. 2 in D major during a summer vacation in 1881 while staying in Zhitovo, southeast of Moscow, at the estate of his friend, composer Nikolai Lodyzhensky. He dedicated it to his wife Ekaterina Protopova. Borodin was a composer only in his free time, pursuing a successful career as a physician and chemist instead. Yet he managed to write many pieces of music of great importance and influence, such as this magnificent string quartet.
