We often here terms like "Profound Autism" used by the media, government officials, and autism parents, so what is it? Profound autism is an outdated term that is considered offensive by the autistic community, similar to other words that begin with "R" or "N". This term was used primarily during the time of the DSM 3 and DSM 4 when we knew very little about autism and thought that individuals could actually be more or less autistic. Research has found, however, that autism isn't actually linear, rather it's a spectrum similar to the color wheel where autistic individuals have higher or lower support needs in a variety of areas in their life. Autism is not a disease or an epidemic. Autism is a neurological difference that is inherited via genetics. If one person in a family group is autistic then the chances are high that others in that same biological family are also autistic they may just have different support needs and may or may not be diagnosed due to masking. In this video, I'll explain in depth of how the autistic brain works, what causes autistics to have higher or lower support needs, and debunk the harmful myth of "profound autism".
