This video compares the “Alefgard Theme” background music from “Dragon Quest,” “Dragon Quest II: Gods of the Evil Spirits,” and “Dragon Quest III: Into the Legend,” across the Famicom, MSX & MSX2, Super Famicom, and Game Boy versions. In addition, you’ll hear various remixed versions of these classic tracks.
The Alefgard theme serves as a musical motif throughout the “Roto Trilogy” (DQ1–3), appearing in each of the three games. Here, you can listen to and compare the themes as they appear in all three titles, as well as enjoy original remixes.
The track “Into the Wide World” plays in DQ1 and DQ2. While the basic melody is the same, each version features subtle arrangement differences. Notably, in the Super Famicom and Game Boy versions, the song structure is based on the orchestral arrangement and consists of a 2.5 loop format.
“In Alefgard” is the theme used in DQ3. While its arrangement differs significantly from “Into the Wide World,” the shared melody instantly evokes Alefgard.
Three unique remixes are included: a 6-version remix of “Into the Wide World,” a 3-version remix of “In Alefgard,” and a final 9-version remix combining both themes. Since the melodies are consistent, the transitions should feel natural.
Between these remixes, you’ll also hear the “Spirit Rubiss” theme from DQ2 and “Dawn Over Alefgard” from the post-Zoma scene in DQ3, also remixed to fit the flow of the Roto saga.
Many tracks in the Roto trilogy, such as “Spirit Rubiss,” use the Alefgard theme as a leitmotif. The iconic “Hero’s Challenge,” played during the Zoma battle in DQ3, shares its main melodic phrase with the Alefgard theme. In the future, I’d like to create a video comparing tracks that use Alefgard’s theme as a leitmotif.
