While visualizing central tendency measures, such as mean (average) or median, can be useful for normally distributed data it is less useful when you have a different distribution like a left or right skew. For this reason, understanding the distribution of your data is crucial for data-driven decision-making. A histogram and cumulative frequency distribution chart is the perfect visualization for allowing you to get a quick view of how your data is distributed.
In this video tutorial, we walk you through how to set up your data in Power Query and how to create the appropriate DAX measures for creating a histogram and cumulative frequency distribution chart. In the final step, we put it into a clustered column and line combination chart to allow us to visualize the number of data points falling within a bin and a cumulative frequency distribution (running total) line.
