He had a physical build rarely seen at the QB position, with unique athleticism to match, a cannon armed QB with accuracy and the ability to scramble, he would attend the University of Central Florida where he was the leader of a UCF Golden Knights team who were transitioning into D1-A NCAA Football in the late 90s. After a stellar 4 years, he would be a high first round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings and in just his second pro season he would be a starter and pro bowler. It helped that he had stars like Randy Moss, Cris Carter and Robert Smith, but Culpepper still looked as good as advertised early in his career. But then over the next few years, you started seeing a lot of inconsistency in his play, sometimes he was unstoppable, and sometimes it didn’t seem like he could do anything right. But he made up for it during the ’03 and ’04 NFL seasons, when he made back to back pro bowls, as one of the game’s best passers. But in 2005, he would severely injure his knee, and was never able to get close to the level he was playing at in Minnesota. He feuded with Nick Saban for a season in Miami, then was brought in by Oakland as insurance for JaMarcus Russell, he would briefly retire before joining the 2008 Detroit Lions halfway through their 0-16 season, then acting as a rookie Matt Stafford’s backup in 2009 before calling it quits for good. Daunte Culpepper never had much playoff success, but a lot of his great years in Minnesota were wasted due to them having one of the worst defenses in the league. Yes, he was turnover prone, but he also played some terrible 0-Lines throughout his career. So, even though his career didn’t continue on the same trajectory it started, there was no doubt that Daunte Culpepper had the talent, and maybe if circumstances were different, his career would’ve been much better.
