Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie and independent MP Zali Steggall have had a back-and-forth over new electoral reforms.

This comes as Labor and the Coalition have come together to push through major electoral reforms after the government agreed to the Opposition’s demand to increase the bill’s proposed caps on individual donations.

The reforms will significantly limit donations that independent parties would be able to receive.

“The Senate actually went into committee stage where questions were asked by the crossbench, by indeed the Coalition and other Senators of the government and of minister Farrell this week Zali, so why don’t you check your facts; it was scrutinised,” Ms McKenzie told Sky News Australia.

“Please don’t get high and mighty here today about a piece of legislation that was looked at through inquiry, that had a committee stage in the Senate and second reading speeches and debate when you have supported the slamming through of legislation in guillotines in both chambers.”
