Located in Washington DC on the heights of the American capital, in an upscale neighborhood, the property was purchased in 1920 by a couple of diplomats, Robert and Mildred Bliss, who wanted to create a haven of greenery in the heart of the city. On the hillside, the gardens are organized in terraces to match the topography of the place. In the 1940s, Ruth Havey, a student of Beatrix Farrand, redesigned certain spaces and breathed an even more baroque spirit into the gardens. Now open to the public, the gardens are owned by Harvard University.
