Welcome back! In this week's video we begin with Episode one in the "How to Make Plates on the Pottery Wheel" series! I'm showing you how to make your very own pottery plates, starting with the beginner-friendly method. Even if you're new to the pottery wheel, you'll learn how to transform a 2lb ball of clay into a beautiful, functional plate.

I'll walk you through centering your clay (don't worry, it doesn't have to be perfect!), then demonstrate how to use a rolling pin (or any cylindrical object!) to compress the clay into a flat disc. You'll learn essential techniques like applying even pressure, maintaining clay thickness, and preventing common issues like warping and cracking.

I'll show you two methods for lifting the rim of your plate: cutting with a wooden knife and my preferred method using a sponge to push the clay up, which helps maintain centering and re-align clay particles. We'll finish up by adding a subtle flare to create that contemporary plate style you often see in restaurants.

Whether you want a plate with a foot or a footless design, this video has you covered for the basics. Stay tuned for Episode 2 where we'll dive into intermediate and advanced plate-making techniques, and even how to make a wide base platter!
