Just when I thought our Great Lakes maritime season was ending, it began again. As it turns out, Captain Darrell Walton, whose uncle Grant Walton, went down on the Edmund Fitzgerald in a Lake Superior storm, presents new information...at least new to me...more information I had never heard before. Captain Darrell discovered Work Orders for the Fitzgerald that reveal that the Mighty Fitz had work done on her radars during her last summer of 1975. And of course, we know, based on Captain McSorley's radio conversations, that he lost both radars during their final hours on Lake Superior. Captain Darrell also takes us back to the launch of the Fitzgerald on June 8, 1958 where he believes that Mighty Fitz suffered structural damage right from the start...structural damage that only got worse over the years and ultimately led to her demise. The more I learn about the Fitz, the more I believe we know what happened on November 10, 1975 when she went down in a violent Lake Superior storm. So join me, the History Mystery Man, and Captain Darrell for yet another deep dive on the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald...and thanks for your support!
