1) Want a comfortable blanket? Sew it yourself. A homemade blanket will bring more joy and pleasure than a purchased one.
The choice of blanket must be taken responsibly, because for many hours we are alone with it. Therefore, the blanket should be liked and comfortable.
So why not sew it together and choose the fabric that suits you best.
At first glance, sewing a blanket with your own hands seems difficult. But in reality everything is much simpler, you just need to be patient.
I have already sewn a couple of blankets and have developed certain rules for making them.
Of course, we are not talking about sewing a thick product made of wool or down. It is enough to sew a thinner blanket from padding polyester; it is as thick as a home sewing machine.
For such a blanket, cotton fabrics are suitable - calico, chintz, linen, satin and the like, since a duvet cover is not provided here. This blanket is easy to wash like regular bed linen.
I used Ivanovo calico, you can take pieces of fabric and make a blanket in the patchwork style.
How to sew a blanket.
First, I cut the fabric and prepared two canvases measuring 155x205 cm.
Now you need to smooth out the folds well.
I placed padding polyester between two pieces of fabric, straightened everything out well, and secured the edges with needles.
Now I need to select a stitch, I will have diamonds. First, I drew one side diagonally with parallel lines every 15 cm.
But the lines swept away all three layers.
I recently bought a set of needles specifically for basting fabric. If you come across these, be sure to buy them for yourself. This is just a fairy tale, there are two big differences - an ordinary needle and something like that. It is very convenient and fast to sew, the thread is easily threaded into the eyelet, the needles are long. I bought them at a specialized store that sells sewing machines.
Stitched, you can quilt with a straight stitch or decorative stitch.
For stitches along a different diagonal, basting is not necessary, since all layers are stitched.
Now I trimmed the edges of the blanket with scissors.
I finished the cuts with bias tape.
Ready!
A homemade blanket is sure to become a favorite and will bring more joy and pleasure than a product bought in a store.
2) I don’t buy blankets, I take padding polyester and sew them myself. Now you don't even need duvet covers.
For many years now, synthetic filling for duvets and pillows has been very popular. This is because this material has a number of advantages over fluff or cotton wool.
For example, a blanket made of padding polyester is soft, airy, lightweight, hypoallergenic, easy to machine wash and dries quickly. The price of such products is much lower than other similar ones.
The good thing about padding polyester blankets is that you don’t have to wear a duvet cover for them, of course, if it doesn’t have several layers. The main thing is to choose a fabric that is pleasant to the body. It can be chintz, calico, satin, linen or cotton scraps collected together. Before work, the fabric must be wetted to avoid shrinkage in the future.
The stitch will decorate the blanket. Modern sewing machines have many beautiful stitches for this.
- Before you start sewing, you need to lay the fabric out on a flat surface and draw the lines along which the stitching will go. Then padding polyester, followed by fabric again. Spread all layers well.
“I have a pattern of stars on the fabric that you can use to guide you, so I didn’t have to draw anything.”
- Some dressmakers pin all layers together. I find it convenient to baste with a needle and thread. I only do this in one direction.
- Then I switch to the typewriter and scribble.
Here it is important to lay the lines in one direction. If you started stitching from the upper right corner, then continue, after finishing the stitch you need to go back to the top. When there is a lot of blanket and it barely fits inside the machine, I twist it tightly and continue stitching.
If you unfold the blanket and continue to sew, then distortions will immediately appear on the fabric and everything will be ruined.
- After the lines are sewn in one direction, I remove the basting threads and sew in the other direction.
- I used straight binding to finish the edge. I placed it on the inside of the blanket and stitched it.
- I do the corners like this.
- In the corner I fold the strip at a right angle, stitching until the resulting diagonal. I'm putting an end to it.
- Next I continue the line from this point. The result is a corner of fabric.
- Then I turn the finishing strip right side out, fold it in two folds and stitch it.
Second blanket.
Thus, I sewed two baby blankets.
Diamond and square stitches.
