In the late 1980s, Japan experienced an RPG boom largely powered by explosive popularity of the Dragon Quest series. This tidal wave of success spawned a host of imitators, but it also paved the way for some genuine contenders – including one that would eventually come to rival and even surpass Dragon Quest on a global scale. This is my retrospective review of Final Fantasy – the game that saved a company.
