Finding Contact and Reading the Sighter: #5 of The Nine Essential Skills for Tight Line Nymphing

Video Not Working? Fix It Now

There are three things that make any tight line system work: taking the traditional fly line out of the game (therefore creating a tighter connection with less sag and more control) using just one diameter of tippet under the water, and employing a sighter. The sighter is probably the most important.

That two to four feet of colored line that we build into our leader shows us everything we need to know about what’s going on underneath. With contact on the sighter, it points to our flies, so we can read the angle, depth and speed of the flies below.

When we learn to find contact and read the sighter, we’re no longer guessing about where the flies are. We know where they are, and we control where they'll go next.

With a tight line rig, we’re no longer hoping something will happen. We’re making it happen. And that knowledge really l begins with finding contact and reading the sighter.

These nine essential skills are the baseline for dead drifting nymphs with a tight line. These are the necessary fundamentals. We fish many different tactics and fly styles on a Mono Rig, tight line system, but it all starts here. These skills set the foundation for everything else that is possible.

This nine-part video series is a companion resource to the Troutbitten article series and the podcast series.

Have fun out there.
