How much can you get away with in a painting when the basics are good?

That's the question I'll be asking (and hopefully answering, at least in part) today when I'm picking up the brushes again for a go at this quince.

It's a fairly simple subject, with clear light and shadow. That's the point, because as long as you have good form and reasonable drawing, you can really push the expression in the rest of the painting.

So today, I'm going to be leaving everything very loose, very expressive, and then seeing how little I can get away with on the quince.

So I'll be starting by simple adding a lot of abstract texture to the panel.

Along the way, I'll be demonstrating how you can add life, expression and mood to even a simple subject like this - as long as the basics are there:

. Reasonably good drawing
. Good values
. Clear separation of light and shadow
