Raw DV footage from 2003. Mostly during a heavy snowfall weather event. The world's fair bluebird fleet lived its entire life on the Flushing Line from 1963 to 2003. About 2 dozen R-36 WF cars were lent out to the 1, 3 and 6 lines for most of those 40 years. These St. Louis Car company built cars were the highest evolution of the post-war painted steel subway car design. All subsequent orders of rolling stock had stainless steel bodies. With the introduction of this fleet the entire IRT portion of the system was operated with post war R-type cars (except the 3rd Ave el where pre-war cars ran until retirement in 1969). The World's fair fleet was partially retro-fitted with air-conditioning during the early 1980s. In 1984-85 they became the first car class to be rebuilt, painted red, and kept 100% graffiti free for the remainder of their service life. For the first 20 years they were the newest cars on the IRT lines. On Nov 4, 2003 the entire system fleet became 100 pct composed of cars with stainless steel bodies.
