Not being true to ourselves is people's most significant regret. Understanding ourselves and facing our fears is the formula to becoming authentic. Since it takes lots of experience to acquire self-knowledge, we don't fully know who we are early in life, especially if we follow the heteronormative thesis most of us were raised with. Moreover, the healthy coping skills needed to face our fears usually lag behind self-awareness. So it is no surprise that many people come out later in life.
