Hiking The Bottle Slide on Giant Mountain in the Adirondacks of New York.
The Bottle Slide is the northernmost slide on Giant Mountains West Slope. Along with several other slides, this 1,300-foot landslide was created in June 1963 by a localized downpour. The slipe is generally around 30° with opportunities for some climbing and scrambling in the 4th class!
This hike starts at the Roaring Brook trailhead. From there, you will ascend 1.75 miles until you come to a cairn. Make a left at the Cairn and follow the herd path down into the Roaring Brook drainage. Follow the drainage up until a tributary on the left. Unfortunately, I’ve climbed this drainage twice in the last two weeks and I still have yet to spot this tributary. With the help of my satellite, I was able to bushwhack onto the tributary that I needed. Follow this up all the way to the base of the slide. You are bushwhacking up the drainage for about 1 mile. Have a great hike. This is a great one! When you get to the head wall at the top of the slide, you can follow it left until the cliffs eventually end and it’s only a short walk into the trail. If you get to the head wall and you decide to go right you’ll have to do a 5.5 climbing route to get on to the summit Ridgeline.
