Hokushin Ittō-ryū Hyōhō Kōjō Gokui Goten no Kata

The Kōjō Gokui Goten no Kata, better known as the original Ittō-ryū Hyōhō of Itō Ittōsai Kagehisa. Those five kata are the only kata set which can for certain be traced directly back to Itō Ittōsai, who founded the Ittō-ryū around the 1580s.

Those kata are based on the Chujō-ryū kata (forms) and waza (techniques) which Itō Ittosai sensei studied under his teacher Kanemaki Jisai. The Goten no Kata thus are considered the original Ittō-ryū, as most of the other kata (including kodachi) were created by his successor Mikogami Tenzen Tadaaki (and in turn his successors) who later became one of the two primary swordsmanship instructors of the Tokugawa shōgunate. All authentic and fully transmitted Ittō-ryū branches which can trace their lineage directly back to Itō Ittōsai have this kata set preserved.
