Ever wonder why you need a phono preamp for your turntable? In this video, engineer Dave Polster explains what is literally being cut into the grooves of a standard, stereo vinyl record. In short, the RIAA curve (playback) and Inverse RIAA curve (cutting) combine to make your records sound "flat" on playback. This is achieved using a mid-side matrix, which also can ensure mono compatability in the process. In addition to applying the RIAA curve, your phono preamp also adds significant volume/gain to the signal to make it easily interface with other modern electronics such as power amplifiers.
