Bracing has been around for many years as a treatment for scoliosis. Due to the nature of the brace and its purpose, it has evolved throughout the years. Also, their purpose and desired outcomes vary based on their design.
-Traditional bracing:
This is known as the current state of orthopedic bracing. The Boston brace and Providence brace are the two main braces used in this category.
The Providence brace is a night-time-squeezing brace meant to slow down progression. It is most commonly used in adolescents.
The Boston brace is an all-day brace, often worn standing. It does the same thing as the Providence brace; try to slow down the progression of scoliosis.
-Corrective bracing
This is the opposite of the Boston and Providence braces. Corrective bracing focuses on reducing the curve. The most commonly used corrective brace is the ScoliBrace.
Corrective bracing works for most patients more often than traditional bracing.
Traditional bracing is often only recommended for adolescent stages of scoliosis to try and control the development of the curve. This is because, in a period of 1-2 years, adolescents experience a growth spur that equals a rapid progression of their scoliosis. The brace is an effort to keep it under control.
Traditional bracing is rarely seen in infants and adults. However, the corrective style of bracing can be used in all ages and stages of progression.
When thinking about how long a person should wear a brace, it will often depend on what we are trying to accomplish. For adult patients bracing is often used for pain control for a few hours per day, but in adolescents, bracing could be done for longer periods of time to prevent the growth of the curve.
The average time for a patient to use bracing regardless of the hours of the day they spend with the brace is 18 months. Counting the time of adjustment and then the time to wean the patient off their brace.
In the case of adolescents, it does make sense to have them wear a brace until they stop growing. But for adults, it doesn't because their progression is already slow, and wearing a brace will often be short-term and for pain management.
The bracing model used at the Scoliosis Reduction Center is more focused on making scoliosis better, not just slowing it down.
The design of the brace has a great impact on how efficient it will be and how well it will work for a patient.
Traditional braces are designed to slow progression, so you should not expect a Boston or Providence brace to produce a reduction. However, corrective braces like the ScoliBrace will focus on pushing the spine and reducing the curve.
Integrating the brace with appropriate exercises, rehabilitation, and managing the brace by getting it adjusted every 90 days is the best way to get the most of your scoliosis brace and get the best reduction possible. Keeping these aspects in check will ultimately determine your outcome.
A brace could be a powerful tool in getting the results you want from your scoliosis treatment if combined properly.
