In this video, I build the Metcalfe Single Track Engine Shed in red Brick (PO331 - OO Gauge layout), a detailed card construction kit perfect for adding character and depth to any layout. I show all 21 steps of the process from start to finish — no shortcuts, no skipped steps, a few mistakes - just honest, hands-on modelling.
This shed is actually a long time coming! I built several Metcalfe kits for my 00 gauge shunting layout over seven years ago, and this engine shed has been waiting patiently since I started my first ever layout 4 months ago. It’s the final piece to complete the original batch, so in many ways this feels like the end of an era — and a satisfying one at that.
Throughout the build, I follow all 21 steps of the included instructions, showing you every stage in detail. Whether you're brand new to Metcalfe kits or a seasoned modeller looking for tips, I walk you through the process in real time, including a few thoughts and tricks I’ve picked up over the years.
You'll see how I use:
- A sharp craft knife and scissors for precision cutting
- Rocket Card Glue, which I swear by for its fast grab and clean finish
- Wooden pegs as makeshift clamps to hold parts in place while drying
- And of course — steady hands and a bit of patience!
I also talk through some challenges, such as aligning wall sections neatly, getting tight corners glued just right, and working with layered detail elements like lintels and roof supports. Even though this is a cardboard kit, the end result has a surprisingly robust and detailed feel — perfect for any OO gauge layout, especially industrial or depot scenes.
As with all Metcalfe kits, precision and methodical steps really do pay off. I find this kind of modelling relaxing and rewarding, and I hope you’ll feel inspired to tackle your own kit build after watching.
If you’re following my shunting layout build series, this kit is featured alongside the other buildings I constructed years ago, helping complete the scene around the yard and sidings. You might even recognise a few familiar structures if you’ve seen earlier episodes!
