If you recently bought a new or used car, there’s a chance it might have a hidden GPS tracker installed—especially if it came from a dealership that partners with companies like IKON Technologies, Spireon, or other telematics providers. These devices are often pitched as “theft protection” or “lot management tools,” but many stay active long after the sale, sometimes without the buyer’s knowledge.
To find these hidden GPS trackers, start by checking the OBD-II port under the steering wheel—some devices plug directly into this port and are easy to spot. Next, remove the driver or passenger-side kick panels where installers often tuck hardwired devices. Look for small black boxes zip-tied to harnesses or tucked away near existing modules. Another common hiding spot is under the hood: inspect around the battery tray or fuse box area, especially if you notice extra wiring. Many of these units are powered using “add-a-fuse” taps, so any fuse that looks out of place or has a piggyback-style adapter might be a clue.
If you find one of these units and you’re not using any associated subscription service, you can safely disconnect and remove it—but always be cautious not to interfere with any of the car’s critical systems. This video will walk you through the process of identifying, locating, and removing these hidden GPS trackers step-by-step.
