Herbs belonging to the genus Anthurium frequently grow on other plants as epiphytes. Some are land-based. The shape of the leaves varies, and they are frequently grouped. Perfect little flowers with male and female structures are produced by the inflorescence. On the spadix, there are closely spaced spirals that hold the blooms. The spadix is frequently extended into a spike-like shape, but it can also have a globe- or club-like shape. The spathe, a kind of bract, is located beneath the spadix. This also varies in shape, however many species have a lance-like shape. It could spread out straight or curved. On occasion, it acts as a hood over the spadix. The flowers on the spadix give rise to the fruits.
For many years, anthuriums have been well-liked tropical houseplants. Because of their vibrant spathes, which are actually a protective type of leaf that encircles the plant's spadix, they are also known as spathe flowers, flamingo flowers, and taliflowers. Although the spathe is not a flower at all, the spadix that emerges from it occasionally produces miniature male and female flowers to aid in reproduction.
The vibrant red, pink, purple, orange and white hues of its colorful spathe can be found depending on variety, despite the fact that these real blooms are rarely recognized. Just one anthurium plant may make a space feel more tropical. These plants are native to Central and Southern America, where many kinds grow on trees in the rain forests. Of course, homeowners are also putting this exotic plant in their outdoor spaces. Anthuriums often grow well indoors, but caring for them outside is more challenging.
Basic Care for Anthurium
Bright, directed light is optimal for their growth. The soil must be free draining but retain some water in order to properly care for anthuriums. An equal mixture of potting soil and orchid soil or perlite will give the type of soil that anthuriums prefer if you are growing this plant as a houseplant.
They are luscious berries that come in a variety of colors and often have two seeds.
Anthurium breeders primarily concentrate on the spadix and spathe, creating cultivars with vibrant colors and distinctive shapes. Only two species, Anthurium scherzerianum, and A. andraeanum, two of the most prevalent taxa in culture, produce vivid red spathes. Additionally, they have been bred to generate spathes in a variety of various hues and patterns.
Due to calcium oxalate crystals, anthurium plants are toxic. Skin and eyes are irritated by the sap.
Anthuriums are listed in NASA's air purifying plants list. They are one of the best houseplants that purify indoor air. Their large, dark leaves suck up ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene, so they're a thoughtful present for a workplace (especially around copiers, printers, or adhesives).
