◎Fukuyama Castle was built in 1619, early in the Edo period, by Mizuno Katsunari, a cousin of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and is located in the center of Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. It was valued by the shogunate as an important base in the western part of the country, and has since played a role as a strategic defense facility and a symbol of the Fukuyama domain. Fukuyama Castle combines the practical castle design of the Sengoku period with the design as a symbol of peace in the Edo period, making it an important example of Japanese castle architecture.

◎Fukuyama Castle is also known by the names "Hisamatsu Castle" and "Iyo Castle." The name "Hisamatsu Castle" comes from Hisamatsuyama Castle in Mikawa, the hometown of the castle's builder, Mizuno Katsunari, and was given as a sign of respect for his family and hometown. Meanwhile, "Iyo Castle" comes from "Iyo," the old name for the area around Fukuyama, and was given to the castle as a symbol of the history of this area surrounded by abundant nature.

◎Fukuyama Castle has a "flatland castle" structure, with multiple lines of defense surrounding it. "Flatland castles" are a type of castle built on the side of a low hill, and Fukuyama Castle was built on a hill about 30 meters above sea level, with a design that makes use of the natural terrain. The north side of the castle in particular is covered with iron plates as a fire prevention measure, and you can see the ingenuity used to protect the building from fire and moisture.
