"No" is the negative answer to a question. "No" is used exclusively to answer questions.
The negative article "kein" negates only nouns and is used with nouns without an article and with nouns with an indefinite article.
"Not" is used to negate anything that is not negated with "no" or "none". This means that verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, proper nouns, nouns with definite articles and possessive articles, parts of sentences, and whole sentences are negated with "not".
