This time, Uncle Gunadasa's vegetable garden yielded a bountiful harvest of snake gourds. The field, spanning about half an acre, was covered by a stunning light green canopy created by the snake gourd vines. The sunlight that filtered through this web-enhanced its beauty, creating a breathtaking spectacle. When viewed with half-closed eyes, the glistening canopy resembled a field of diamonds. The snake gourds hanging down from this shimmering canopy created the illusion of numerous barriers obstructing the radiant display of dewdrops.
After being mesmerised by this enchanting early morning scene, I almost forgot the reason for my visit to the snake gourd garden. When I mentioned that I was going to pick snake gourds, the elder aunty requested a few tender ones. In the end, I found myself plucking extra snake gourds for her as well.
I cooked snake gourd white curry to complement the chicken dry fry. To enhance the flavour and improve the texture of the somewhat watery snake gourd, I added a handful of boiled channa dhal. It definitely improved the taste of the curry. I asked my brother to prepare a snake gourd salad by himself to avoid his usual hints and complaints. He had made a delicious salad with cherry tomatoes that he had brought from our elder aunty's house. This fresh salad, made with tender fresh snake gourds, is truly a delight to look at and has a wonderful taste as well.
After an early lunch, my brother began whining in the evening, asking me to make something for him to satisfy his appetite. I couldn’t refuse, as before my bath, I had promised him I would prepare a dish using the snake gourds I had picked early that morning. When I came out of the bath, my brother had already started to arrange the ingredients. I knew he would have made by himself and eaten everything if I had taken even a little longer. However, he spoke as if I was making the dish because I was hungry that evening.
Later that evening, I used the leftover chicken fry and potatoes to create a filling for the snake gourds. This dish was simple to prepare; I coated the filled snake gourds with breadcrumbs and deep-fried them. I made sure not to fry them for too long, as the fresh snake gourds could lose their fresh deliciousness. I always pay close attention to every new recipe to maintain its delicious taste and nutritional value because my loved ones always come first in my family.
Love you All!
