Lotus Eletre 2025 review: Bonkers but practical electric SUV redefines British sports-car brand

The 2025 Lotus Eletre doesn't make a lot of sense on paper. On one hand it's a Lotus, which evokes memories of lightweight British sports cars. But on the other it's a large SUV, a family focused vehicle that's meant to be sensible. Oh, and it's fully electric, too, so you can forget about a screaming internal-combustion engine. Point being, this new model is at odds with itself from the get-go.

That said, the Eletre is a look into the future of the Lotus brand, with it now owned by Chinese automotive powerhouse Geely. And in a sign of times, it's moving in the zero-emissions direction while adding a series of two-row models that should significantly expand its appeal.

In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Stephen Ottley spends a week living with the new Eletre to find out how well it performs on the everyday grind on weekdays – and on the open road on weekends. After all, it's got to be able to do the latter, too, if it's to be a true Lotus.
