This piece was commissioned back in 2023 after the fire in Maui, Hawaii, burned down my client's house. But he was fixed on completing this piece, and he salvaged two chunks of Hawaiian Kiawe, aka mesquite, for me to play with. You might remember an old video of mine where I turned a smaller piece of this same species. Well, my client wanted something similar. This piece was tricky because it was an end-grain turning the whole way through, with very splintery grain. Pretty much the only effective tool was my 5/8th inch bowl gouge (freshly sharpened), which made the process slightly less arduous. My carbide tools would catch very frequently, causing the belt to slip. I suspect if I had felt comfortable running the lathe at a faster speed the catches may have been less frequent, but not only was the piece out of balance but there were deep cracks which I feared would cause an explosion. For those reasons, I also had to stop twice to use @TotalBoat penetrating epoxy to hold the wood together and prevent the black CA glue from staining the end grain. In the end, this piece came out pretty close to what I had hoped and also without any catastrophic failures. Win! Win!
