In this video, I discuss the concerns of resident of the Avalon apartment complex about potential indications of building movement for their apartment that is just a few hundred feet away the collapses of a sections of roadway on Eastbound I-80 in Wharton, New Jersey that occurred on December 26, 2024. The New Jersey DOT backfilled this sinkhole and repaved this section of I-80 over a 4 day period to reopen to traffic. However, on February 10, 2025 this section of highway had to be closed again due to observed settlement in the middle lanes indicating further sinkhole development. Since the time, the eastbound lanes on this stretch of I-80 have been closed in order to perform further investigations and backfilling and grouting of subsurface openings related to past iron mining activity.
