End of April 1945: The Red Army is on the verge of capturing Berlin. In the bunker of the Reich Chancellery, it is Götterdämmerung. Hitler and the Third Reich are on the brink of capitulation. Facing the hopeless situation, Hitler orders his leadership staff to leave the Reich Chancellery bunker and head toward the Alpine Fortress. Several JU 352 aircraft are tasked with transporting people and materials from Berlin to Obersalzberg in the south. Among the cargo is highly classified material, packed in several crates, which is loaded onto one of the planes.
All the planes reach their destination, the Ainring airfield near Salzburg. However, one plane, piloted by the experienced Major Gundelfinger and carrying the highly secretive cargo, fails to report its landing in Berlin.
The news of the aircraft crashing in flames south of Dresden near Börnersdorf reaches Hitler and throws him into a rage. Only two people survive the crash, and parts of the cargo burn. Several crates containing the mysterious cargo are ejected from the plane. They are recovered by an SS unit and transported to their destination in Berchtesgaden. However, instead of the Obersalzberg, they are taken to the "Alpenhof" in Hintersee, where Hitler's leadership staff retreated shortly before the Obersalzberg was bombed.
The son of the then-owner of the "Alpenhof" vividly recalls the arrival of the secret cargo and the final days of the collapsing Third Reich, which he experienced as a young boy alongside Hitler's closest leadership staff at his father's inn. In a compelling interview, he recounts the events between April 25 and May 2, 1945, in detail: the escape of prominent Nazi figures and the fate of the mysterious crates from the Führer’s plane. His knowledge has, for the first time, established a link between the crashed Führer plane near Börnersdorf and the last command center of the Third Reich, the "Alpenhof" in Hintersee.
What was packed in the mysterious crates remains a mystery to this day. Speculations range from gold bars to secret documents to a fabled Nazi treasure.
This extraordinarily informative documentary includes numerous interviews and, in part, previously unpublished film and photo material.
