Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the early modern history continues with a video on the Prelude to the War of the Spanish Succession, which some historians consider to be the World War 0. The death of Charles II of Spain in 1700 set off a major European crisis, as the Spanish Succession Crisis pitted the powerful Habsburgs of Austria against the Bourbons of France for control of Spain and its vast empire. With Spain’s decline after centuries of war and economic struggles, The Decline of the Spanish Empire had left the throne vulnerable. Meanwhile, The Rise of France under Louis XIV had made the Bourbons a dominant force in Europe. Diplomats attempted to broker peace, but conflicting claims and secret deals made war inevitable. The final decision came when Philip V Takes the Throne, as Louis XIV rejected treaties in favor of placing his grandson on Spain’s throne. With this, tensions erupted, alliances formed, and Europe Prepares for Conflict, marking the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession—a struggle that would reshape the balance of power in Europe.
