In 1974, deep in the Pacific Ocean, one of the most secret and complex operations of the Cold War was carried out: Project Azorian. This CIA-backed operation aimed to recover the wreckage of the Soviet submarine K-129 from a depth of 5,000 meters in the ocean. The giant ship called Glomar Explorer, developed by Howard Hughes' company, was the key to this operation. However, this operation went down in history not only with its engineering and technology, but also with its great diplomatic risk. In this video, we will examine the details of Project Azorian and the behind-the-scenes of this intelligence operation that left its mark on history.
K-129 was a Soviet Golf-class submarine carrying three nuclear warheads. It mysteriously sank in 1968 and was searched for by the Soviets for months. However, the US determined the exact location of the submarine thanks to the SOSUS system. The CIA designed the Glomar Explorer ship under the guise of "mining research" to recover the wreckage. This ship was equipped with a special capture device and robotic systems to remove the huge submarine wreckage from the bottom of the ocean. However, technical failures occurred during the operation and only a part of the submarine could be brought to the surface. The information and technologies seized went down in history as one of the greatest intelligence successes.
Project Azorian is remembered as one of the most expensive and risky operations in the history of intelligence. Whether the operation was completely successful is still a matter of debate. However, one thing is certain: This operation was a success that pushed the boundaries of engineering and strategic planning in the shadow of the Cold War. So, do you think this billion-dollar operation achieved its goal?
