Dozens of Democratic lawmakers and protesters have gathered outside the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) headquarters after billionaire Elon Musk announced President Trump had agreed with him to shut down the agency.

The Trump administration reportedly locked USAID workers out of their headquarters without warning in downtown Washington, DC, on Monday.

Congressional Democrats vowed to act against the move, with Representative for Virginia, Don Beyer, stating, “This is a case at the very worst among us attacking the very best of us.”

The aid the organisation provides is aimed at strengthening democracy, protecting human rights, improving global health and advancing food security, according to the agency’s website.
