Pt. M. Venkatesh Kumar is an Indian classical vocalist. He is Born in Lakshmipura in the Dharwad region of northern Karnataka. He is renowned for his husk, vibrant classical singing style, He is also popular in singing Dasara Padas & Devotional songs. He learnt Hindustani vocal in the Gwalior and Kirana Gharana styles under the Veerashaiva saint and Hindustani Classical musician, Puttaraj Gawai. He blends these styles effortlessly in his presentations, though he admits to influences beyond these gharanas.
In Raag Mishra Khamaj, several small ("kshudra prakriti") raags are blended and brewed together in such a way that the main Raag (Raag Khamaj) is embellished and enhanced in its elegance, this fused or mixed nature is the reason it is often called Raag Mishra (mixed) Khamaj.
Raag Khamaj is a late evening raag and is brought out rather elegantly in the light classical form of thumri. The Khamaj terrain ranges over all manner of melodic twists and turns and has been extensively mined.
