I recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to Sethan Village, a serene hamlet nestled in the Hamta Valley near Manali, Himachal Pradesh. Situated at an elevation of approximately 14,000 feet, Sethan is renowned for its tranquil environment and serves as the gateway to the famous Hamta Pass Trek.
Our primary goal was to experience snowfall away from the bustling crowds at Atal Tunnel, and Sethan proved to be the perfect destination. Upon arrival, I witnessed snowfall for the first time, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.
The adventure escalated as we navigated the snow-laden trails in our Toyota Fortuner and Mahindra Scorpio N. Driving in such conditions was both thrilling and challenging. Notably, vehicles like the Mahindra Thar 4x4 faced difficulties due to inappropriate Highway Terrain (HT) tires, which lacked the necessary grip for snowy terrains. In contrast, the Maruti Gypsy King and Suzuki Jimny showcased exceptional performance, adeptly handling the slippery ascents and descents.
Sethan's proximity to Hamta Pass, a historic corridor in the Himalayas connecting the Chandra Valley in Lahaul to the Kullu Valley, adds to its allure. The village is also the starting point for the popular Hamta Pass trek, offering breathtaking views of lush alpine meadows, gurgling streams, and snow-capped mountains
Opting for Sethan allowed us to bypass the traffic jams near Atal Tunnel and immerse ourselves in an authentic snowy adventure. The combination of serene landscapes, the thrill of driving in snow, and the charm of Sethan Village made this experience truly remarkable.
