Kii no Kuni Ichinomiya
I visited Niutsuhime Shrine
It will be the head temple of the 88 shrines of Niu Shrine in Japan.
It is said to have been founded around 300 AD, about 1,700 years ago.
Shrines with the character tan are names often given to places where there used to be mines where red sand ore can be obtained.
There was a mine in the past, and it is believed that she was a goddess worshiped by the people who worked there.
*Red sand was one of the precious things for ancient Japanese people, along with gold and iron.
In the Jomon period, it was used to color pottery, and after the introduction of Buddhism, it was used to paint the pillars, walls, and bridges of shrines and temples.
I touched on it briefly in the video.
When Kukai (Kobo Daishi) was looking for a place to spread Shingon Buddhism
It is said that Takanomiko no Okami, the son of Niutsuhime no Okami, transformed herself into a hunter with two dogs and led them to Koyasan.
In connection with that, Kukai built a shrine in the mountain top temple of Koyasan and is enshrined as a guardian deity.
