Getting your drum triggers to respond right can be pretty tough, but it doesn't have to be. If you have a Roland drum trigger, or maybe one from DDrum, Simmons, Yamaha, or Trigger Perfect, this video will show you have to fix 5 really common trigger problems easily.
Problem 1: I hit the drum once, and I get 2-5 drum hits back:
Answer: this is what’s called false triggering. You have a bunch of things you can do to fix this though, it’s not a tough problem on mesh heads. Increase Mask Time and retrigger cancel a tad to fix it. Increase the settings as little as possible though. If all else fails, increase the threshold.
Problem 2: My drum isn’t picking up my ghost notes!
Answer: Go to threshold, and lower the setting slowly until your soft hits are detected. Check your trigger, if it’s not making firm enough contact with the head, then the trigger is the problem.
Problem 3: I have to hit REALLY HARD to get a good response!
Answer: Increase the sensitivity setting (sometimes called gain in different modules). Next go to trigger curve and try some different response curves. If you want an acoustic like response, set it to linear. If you want ultra responsiveness try Log 1/2 or S Curve. If you want to responsiveness to be toned down a bit because you’re a hard hitter set the trigger type to Exponential 1/2/3
Problem 4: Part of the drumhead is responding “hot” and other parts of the drumhead are quieter.
Answer: Move your drum trigger along the rim until the part of the drum you hit most of the time responds right.
Problem 5: The Rim sound is too quiet
Answer: Increase the rim gain setting until the sound level is right
NOTE: if you have a trigger where you have to level it and decide how much pressure it has against the head, experimenting with this will have drastic effects on what settings you use. Not enough pressure will force you to crank the sensitivity in the module, too much pressure will force you to lower sensitivity in the module and so forth.
