Shot this before and during the performance of a play, “Shrikrishna Gaarudi”, presented by Mahalingeshwara Krupaposhita Naataka Mandali of K Hemmanahalli , near Mysore.
I should, first of all, thank Mr Ananthavardhana for the access and opportunity to document this lively event. This is my second visit, in succession, to K Hemmanahalli during Shivaratri.
Last year, I visited purely out of curiosity and was blown away by the energy of the actors and others there. And that is the reason I went this year too, purely for witnessing and capturing raw energy of the actors and the crew.
We, amateur actors, have a lot to learn from these part time actors who are not one bit conscious when on stage. One minute, they are laughing and fooling around in the side wings and the next minute, they are on stage mouthing melodramatic dialogues effortlessly. Even when they forget the cue and when the director (“meshtru “) prompts them, they simply carry on without breaking character.
The crew, who are there for the scenes set up, make up, set and lighting are actually professionals who have been doing this exact same thing since decades now. How are they any less professional than those who practice or pretend to practice theatre in cities?
