Starting with two notes: Improvise Your First Prelude with Czerny

Video Not Working? Fix It Now

Starting with only two notes you can already improvise a prelude. Czerny gives such an example himself in his Systematische Anleitung zum Fantasieren (Systematic instruction manual for improvisation). In this video I give examples on oboe, recorder and piano; but you can do this on any instrument. After starting simply, we slowly add more and more notes and options, working our way towards looking at Czerny's own preludes.

The Systematische Anleitung instructs you how to learn all forms of improvisation used in the 19th century: preludes, introductions, cadenzas, fantasias on one and on several themes, potpourris, variations and capriccios.

Czerny was a Beethoven student and his book thus possibly represents how Beethoven taught improvisation!
