There are around 18 to 20 common chords found in the open position. Most of them can be used as templates for creating even more patterns along the neck. In this lesson, we’re going to learn a highly effective chord trick for the “C” and “G” open chords. This idea is not only easy to do, but it’s also popular and it’s been used by famous bands from the Beatles to Deep Purple.
Open position “C” & “G” chords are two of the most common chord patterns on guitar. When they are viewed as templates, we end up with some really cool harmonies. We can use those harmonies for new riffs easily since the chord geometry is 100% identical to patterns that our fingers already know.
Using open position chords as templates is simple to do. All that is required is viewing the chord pattern as a geometrical fret-template. Once the open chord is viewed this way, it can function in many other areas of the fingerboard.
Additionally, when chord tones have notes that correspond to the notes of our key, the underlying harmony is diatonic. In this lesson I’ll show you how it all works, and how to play riffs using the templates. I’ve even included a cool sounding “G” chord template turnaround riff.
Be sure to experiment using the open chord templates to re-locate along the fingerboard in other ways. Be sure to remain within the key signature if you want to keep the harmony diatonic.
