Lying Flat Buddha | Taiwan | April 3, 2023
Tang Ping is a Chinese slang neologism describing a personal rejection of societal pressures to overwork and overachieve. It means choosing to "lie down flat and get over the beatings" with a low-desire, more indifferent attitude towards life’s demands. However, as Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche reminds us, achieving true Tang Ping is no simple task. It requires savviness and strategic thinking. The modern education system, ingrained values, and self-consciousness all create obstacles to practicing Tang Ping in its purest form.
Rinpoche introduces Astana, the four stages of life in ancient Indian tradition, as a possible representation of the highest form of Tang Ping—a life lived with true wisdom and detachment.
