Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett has been going strong since his exit from the band in 1977. During his tenure with the group they produced their most iconic prog classics like "The Musical Box" from the album "Nursery Cryme" (1971), the 23-minute "Supper's Ready" from "Foxtrot"(1972), and arguably their best album "Selling England by the Pound" the following year.

Long before he had a chance to meet some of the players in King Crimson, including leader Robert Fripp, Hackett saw the band performing these long-form pieces on stage. That planted a bug for him and by his second album with Genesis (Foxtrot-1972) he suggested that Genesis should do the same. This is when the bands longer tune. "Suppers Ready" was created. The masterpiece is almost 23-minutes long.
