Night walking: lunacy. The night that stretches from ancient Rome to modern America. The moonlight from Japan to Germany. The pacing across midnight from East to West. The night walker's history is legal or forbidden, obvious or mysterious, electric or by gaslight. It is is a history in footsteps, lonileness, and remarks. The howling at the moon in poetry. The moon is the constant companion of the wanderer and his night song. Humanity can now look down on the colors of the night they fill with horror or mystery. Mercury-vapor, high pressure sodium, neon, and LED, all the colors of the night. Lunacy and romance.
The night has a sound and song all it's own: solvitur ambulando. It took centuries for walking to develop as an interest in itself own. Was the road only for vagrants and aliens? It is the path of cultists, pilgrims, and writers. Due to the universal influence of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Romantics sought to make the night their own. It was a strange ownership of fake philosophers and odd artists though. They were the first to desire to capture the sensation of the night and the feelings of darkness. Essays from "Walking" to "Night and Moonlight" to "In Praise of Shadows". Night walking is the universe of pure moonlight.
Are you one acquainted with the night?
