In this video we would like to show you the key stages of making Carpathian lizhnyks – woolen blankets and carpets.
The process is interesting and long, including sheep wool production. So, everything starts from sheep breeding that is spread in the Carpathians.
Sheep spend a warm season on highland pastures and they need short wool to prevent overheating, to move fluently and even to save from different infections and diseases.
Therefore, sheep are sheared at the beginning of warm season.
Sheared wool requires several stages of processing. First, they clean wool washing it in hot and cold water for many times and dry it on a fresh air. After this, they dye wool in different colors, adding special dyes. Sometimes, they use wool of natural colors.
Finally, they comb wool with special tools to get fluffy and soft clouds that are used for blankets production.
Ukrainian artisans spin ready wool and make small skeins of yarn, thicker or thinner depending on a future product. Having fixed a woolen basis to the loom, they use the skeins to weave beautiful blankets, called lizhnyks.
The patterns as a rule are unique, coming from imagination of each artisan.
The last stage of lizhnyk production refers to valylo. Valylo is a water tumble, built on a river. Water from mountain river comes directly to the tumble ad they put lizhnyks into this water for several hours.
Here magic happens – the product becomes tough and long lasting and gains its final size. Therefore, nature puts its final point in this process. In the end, they take a blanket out of water and leave it to dry on a fresh air.
Eventually, we obtain a beautiful and unique natural blanket that brings warmth and beauty to our homes.
