TRUST AND HOPE IN THE LORD | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (February 16, 2025)
We are on the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today’s gospel, we would hear St. Luke’s version of Jesus’s remarkable teaching on blessedness—the Beatitudes.
The poor, the hungry, the weeping, the excluded and insulted—they are blessed because the Kingdom of God is theirs. They will have their fill and be satisfied. They will laugh and rejoice. They will be given great reward in heaven, as experienced by God’s prophets.
But woe to the rich. Those whose stomachs and cups are always full now. Those who are overjoyed and are celebrated by their people now. Why? Because, according to Jesus, they have received their reward now and on this earth.
Friends, the Beatitudes offer us a framework that could help us conduct our lives. In whom do we put our trusts? In God or in earthly powers? Do we strive for reward in heaven or merely for earthly consolation?
It is good to reflect on this, brothers and sisters, especially as we continue our pilgrimage on this Jubilee Year of Hope: Trust in the Lord, who is our Lord.
