Ujan Shakya is a talented musician known for songs like Maicha, Rajamati Chaa, Lumanti, Matina Ya Swa and so on. During the 59th session of The Story Yellers, he shared the story of his musical evolution—the struggles, the risks, and the turning points that shaped him into the artist he is today.
After completing his 10th grade, he and his friends planned to start a YouTube channel called Emerge during their vacation. They began uploading cover songs together, and he was anxious about how the audience would respond. Fortunately, the feedback was positive, which motivated him to continue.
During his high school years, he and his friends started performing gigs, but the experience wasn’t as rewarding as they had hoped. That’s when he realized that artists don’t receive much respect unless they create original songs. He thought of working on his own original music. It was during his bachelor’s degree that he started writing his own songs. However, balancing music with his academic assignments became extremely difficult. Then came the lockdown, and he promised himself to make the most of it by learning something he was truly passionate about—music production.
He challenged himself to produce at least one song every month. Meanwhile, his relatives encouraged him to make music in Nepal Bhasa. Though he saw it as a risk, he decided to give it a shot—and to his surprise, the Newa songs performed significantly better than the others. He then released Maicha, which gained 100,000 views within two weeks. Most of the people even today know him from that song.
However, when the lockdown ended, his consistency faltered, and soon, the views on his later songs started declining no matter how many songs he uploaded.
