I’ve had a number of requests to shoot a video series about the Yaesu FT-710 AESS, similar to my FTdx10 series. Ham Radio Outlet loaned me a Yaesu FT-710 AESS for just that purpose.
In this video I will unbox the transceiver, set it up, power it up, and make some initial settings and observations. You might pick up an operating tip or two as well. You know me, I’m all about operating technique.
I did find something disappointing about the FT-710 AESS. I talk about it in the video. In future videos, we will go into more detail, especially critiquing the new NXR Semiconductors DSP. Hint: There seems to be improvement in one aspect of the DSP but a step backwards for another aspect of the DSP. There is no CW decoder.
I believe that the FPGA (SDR chip) used is the ARTIX-7, from the XC7A50T series, (p/n CSG324ABX2141) manufactured by AMD/XILINK.

Most of the operating techniques I show and teach on my channel can be applied to other transceivers, even other brands of transceivers. Some knobs or buttons might be labeled differently but he function is the same. I have no allegiance to Yaesu. No manufacturer makes a perfect radio. They all have strengths and they all have weaknesses. I like to point those out. Yaesu thinks that I am targeting them, but I am not. In fact, they generally have the fewest weaknesses. It’s just that I want my viewers to know the good, the bad, and the ugly, so they can make informed purchase decisions. I am able to be objective because I have no allegiance to a particular manufacturer. My work is supported by private donations, via www.PATREON.com/N4HNH.

Yearly S7 (Executive) members can receive one menu optimizations PDF while yearly S9 (VIP) members can receive multiple menu optimizations documents, plus my FT8 configuration guide for either the FTdx10 or the FT-710 AESS. Future radios might be added. The documents are copyrighted. They shall not be divulged to anyone else without written permission from Doug McAlexander, callsign N4HNH.
