The phrase “南无阿弥陀佛” is a transliteration of the Sanskrit "Namo Amitābha," where "Amitābha" (无量光佛) refers to the Buddha of Infinite Light, and it can also be written as "Amitāyus" (无量寿佛), the Buddha of Infinite Life.
The name “阿弥陀佛” mainly originates from the Amitābha Sūtra (佛说阿弥陀佛经), where it is stated, "In that land, there is a Buddha, named Amitābha." "阿弥陀" is the name of the Buddha, so it is also referred to as "阿弥陀如来" (Amitābha Tathāgata). In the translation of the Amitābha Sūtra by Kumarajiva (鸠摩罗什), he combined the terms "无量寿佛" (Buddha of Infinite Life) and "无量光佛" (Buddha of Infinite Light) into the single translation "阿弥陀佛" (Amitābha Buddha).
