It is located about 8 km from Tokamachi Station in the mountains. There is a pond called Oike, the origin of the place name.
The former Oike Elementary School is now a private art museum called the Mithila Museum.
Mithila Museum
The Mithila Museum of Art houses the Mithila painting, which have been handed down from mother to daughter for 3,000 years in the Mithila region of India, as well as the Warli paintings of the indigenous Warli people and terra cotta (unglazed pottery), which has a history of over 5,000 years. The museum collects and permanently exhibits the rich ethnic (secular) art of India, full of cosmology. The museum also serves as a place for Indian painters visiting Japan to create new art, and its works have been highly evaluated by the Indian government as being unparalleled in quality and quantity.
