‘Down-Cross’ Fishing, considered essential for catching Rainbow Trout in winter fishing areas.
Shigehiro Iida, a VARIVAS field staff member, also PALMS lure designer, had explained this well.
Shigehiro Iida goes to the winter fishing grounds every year after the mountain stream season ends.
This winter the Tone River Rainbow Trout fishing area in Gunma Prefecture that we visited is a wide river with fast currents and strong water pressure.
Unlike Yamame and Japanese Char in mountain streams, Rainbow Trout are the primary target for winter fishing.
We explored strategies to improve our chances of catching Trout during the surprisingly challenging winter fishing season.
Winter fishing areas are being developed in many places, not just along the Tone River in Gunma Prefecture; there more than 20 locations throughout Japan, e.g., Araogawa River in Miyagi Prefecture, Hokikawa River in Tochigi Prefecture, Kanna River (the fishing place called, “Ueno Village Winter season Hakosti”) in Gunma Prefecture, and Saigawa River in Nagano Prefecture.
Hooks must be barbless.
Please check the regulations of each winter fishing area and enjoy fishing!
