Dooku approaches the boy standing in front of the Great Tree in the Jedi Temple. Anakin stares up at the canopy as leaves drift down around him. He did not see Anakin at Qui-Gon’s funeral and suspected he would find him here. Dooku: This was Qui-Gon’s favorite spot in the temple too. He was always fascinated by this tree. Anakin: It’s beautiful. Dooku: Powerful too. This tree is said to be Force-Sensitive. An amazing thing isn’t it? Surrounded by a world of steel and stone, and yet the tree survives. Some have compared it to the Jedi Order. Anakin: It seems like a lonely existence. Dooku: Indeed, such is also the life of a Jedi. Anakin: Then why become a Jedi? Dooku: Because the most important things require making hard decisions. Evil in this world will tear you up and take away the things that matter most to you. The Jedi work to prevent these unfortunate events. Anakin: Qui-Gon said he would leave the Jedi Order. Could he not make the hard decisions? Dooku: On the contrary, I think Qui-Gon was prepared to make the hardest decision. After years of sacrifice and service, only a few can see what service in the Order truly is, a chain around your neck. One that does not even allow yourself to mourn. All you can do is tell yourself that he is one with the Force. Tell me, Anakin. Is that the life you see for yourself? The boy doesn’t answer. Everything has moved so fast. He can barely imagine himself standing where he is now. Dooku: Would you like me to train you, Anakin? Anakin: You? You would train me to be a Jedi? But what about Obi-Wan? Dooku: Obi-Wan is a promising boy, but still just that. A boy. He trains you to honor the memory of his master. But what can honor his memory more than training with his master? But no, I will not make you a Jedi. I intend to train you to be far more. Anakin looks up at the elderly Jedi Master in awe. He can barely hide his excitement at the prospect. Dooku was Qui-Gon’s own master and someone who could train a mighty Jedi Master like him must be amazing. The possibilities run wild in his head as he nods his head eagerly. Dooku smiles and tussles the boy’s hair. He does warn him that this will require him to leave the Jedi Order as Dooku wishes him to be trained differently than the Jedi. Although reluctant to leave his new friends, Anakin cannot reject the offer. In the morning, Dooku departs with Anakin. The two journey back to Dooku’s home planet of Sereno where the young student lives a life he can only dream of. Unlike the poverty of Tatooine, Sereno is elegant and filled with splendor, with Anakin lacking nothing. Not even his family as Dooku frees Shmi and takes her into his household. While it seems like a dream come true, Dooku doesn’t give this life freely and is every bit the strict master Anakin expects. The Count drills Anakin relentlessly in lightsaber combat, with Dooku teaching Anakin everything he knows, ensuring that the boy becomes a master duelist just like him. Despite his age, Dooku remains a force of nature with his lightsaber, practically untouchable when they spar despite Anakin’s age and agility. Here Dooku instills a sense of discipline and control, reminding Anakin to control himself. When they are not sparring, the Count also has Anakin study the ways of the Force, practicing different techniques and performing incredible feats. In contrast to lightsaber combat, Dooku encourages Anakin to let out his emotions, channeling them into the Force. He realizes that Anakin is too old to suppress his emotions like how the Jedi train their younglings so refrains from teaching him the Jedi Code. Instead, he focuses on putting Anakin’s emotions into a place that is useful and productive. But his training does not stop with the ways of the Jedi. True to his words, Dooku isn’t looking to make Anakin another Jedi, he’s looking to mold him into his heir. He also gives him a formal education, teaching him things like history, public speaking, and politics so that Anakin knows how to govern. This happens at a fortuitous time as although the Naboo Crisis is resolved, the roots of the issue are still present and the tensions within the Republic only grow. This leads to a secessionist movement for different systems and corporations who feel under-represented by the Senate. At the center of this is Count Dooku who spends years developing ties with these groups. Anakin accompanies him for most of these trips, learning and representing Sereno in the Separatist movement. Anakin’s presence is an immense help to the CIS movement as seeing a strong young Jedi on their side bolsters their confidence. #starwarstheory #starwarswhatif #countdooku
